From the Fabian Society website: "In the aftermath of the Crewe by-election and 60 years after Michael Young's famous book on meritocracy, MPs David Lammy, Jon Cruddas and David Blunkett will debate the new politics of class at a Fabian event.
The discussion will address whether meritocracy can ever be achieved and if not, whether candidates for jobs or university places can be fairly judged. Should we go back back to Young's original definition of meritocracy for enlightenment?

Whilst trotting out some party activist dressed in a top hat and tails won't seduce waivering voters, we need sorely to talk about class, even as it slips out of the political parlance. It remains an intractable part of Britain's landscape.
